An opening for the player who goes for the win with both colors, the Alekhine’s Defense (1.e4 Nf6!) provokes White to advance their pawns, with the aim of attacking those pawns later on.
Introduced by the 4th World Champion Alexander Alekhine in 1921, this hypermodern opening was also played by Bobby Fischer in his 1972 World Championship match against Spassky, scoring 1½/2.
Now GM Damian Lemos turns his analytical eye to the opening, showing you how to combat all the popular variations and sidelines.
The importance of move-order. In this common line (diagram), we should play 4…d6. Throwing in 4…Nc6 5.d4 d6 allows 6.e6! Now we can’t take with the bishop because of d4-d5 forking our pieces. I cover the little tricks you need to be aware of.
How to deal with sidelines. What if White doesn’t push e4-e5? What if White plays 2.Nc3 and tries to force us into a Four Knights or Vienna Game? I show you how to keep control and get the positions we want.
Ivanchuk’s innovation. We turn to the great genius Vassily Ivanchuk for a powerful plan. Black gives up both bishops AND undoubles White pawns… but his knights and rooks soon dominate the board, paralyzing White’s pieces and forcing surrender!
